If you’re looking for incredible Chinese food in the North West, then Mr Lau’s Dim Sum Bar and Restaurant in Warrington should be at the top of your list.
For our family, Mr Lau’s was our special occasion spot for years. Whether it’s a birthday, an anniversary, or just a long overdue catch up and this week was no different, It was Mark’s birthday, and we knew exactly where we wanted to celebrate.
It's been a while since our last visit but stepping back into the sleek, premium atmosphere of Mr Lau’s felt like coming home. While a few things have changed, the quality remains as high as ever. Here is why we think it’s still the best value, high end meal in town.
The Famous Lunchtime Banquet: Is It Still Good Value?
One of the main reasons we visit Mr Lau's is their legendary lunchtime banquet. It's been a little while since our last visit, so we weren't entirely surprised to see a price adjustment. The Lunchtime Banquet is now £19.99 per person, however, when you consider the quality of the ingredients and the cost of ordering these items individually from the à la carte menu, it remains fantastic value.
What’s included?
-
Prawn crackers
-
A choice of soup
-
A starter
-
A main course with a side of egg fried rice
Top Tip: You can add crispy duck course for an extra £5 per person, which, let’s be honest, is non-negotiable for us!
The Food: Old Favourites and New Discoveries
The Starters: A Cut Above the Rest
As always, we kicked things off with the Chicken and Sweetcorn Soup. It is packed with flavour and literally the best I have ever tasted. Then we each chose a stater, Mark and I went for the prawn toast. It's a world away from the thin, greasy slices you get at a takeaway. This is freshly made, incredibly thick, and packed with juicy prawns. The boys opted for the Chicken Satay Skewers. They were huge, made with fresh, succulent chicken breast and smothered in a rich, creamy satay sauce that had them scraping the plate.
The Mains: New Favourites and Reliable Classics
We like to order a variety of dishes and share them family style. This time our spread included:
- My personal favourite, Chinese Chicken Curry perfectly spiced and always delicious.
- Mark's choice was Beef in Garlic and Chilli, its great for those who want a bit of a kick without it being overwhelming.
- Charlie chose a classic Sweet and Sour Chicken, its crispy chicken and tangy, fresh sauce is always done to perfection.
- Louie loves noodles so we opted for the Chicken Chow Mein, this was our first time trying it at Mr Lau's. It was fantastic and will definitely be at the top of our list for future visits.
Dining with Kids at Mr Lau’s
Mr Lau’s is incredibly family-friendly. They offer a dedicated Kids Menu for £15, which includes:
-
Prawn crackers
-
A main course with a side of fries or egg fried rice
-
A dessert
-
A choice of juice
However, our six-year-old is a real foodie. He prefers the variety of the adult banquet, mostly because he refuses to miss out on that world-class soup! The staff are always accommodating with this. It usually results in a few leftovers, which the restaurant is happy to box up for us to take home and enjoy the next day.
Why We Keep Coming Back
What sets Mr Lau’s apart is the consistent quality of the food. In a world where dining standards can fluctuate, Mr Lau’s feels like a safe pair of hands. The service is always attentive and the theatre of the open kitchen adds a great vibe to the afternoon.
Even with the price increase, the £19.99 banquet feels like a steal for the calibre of ingredients and the beautiful setting. If you’re looking for a lunch that feels like a luxury treat, Mr Lau’s Dim Sum Bar and Restaurant is the place to be.
